The Interview

What inspired you to participate in the Mrs. SA competition?

“Throw me in the water and see if I can swim.” The Big Kahuna. I am a 54 year old woman with grown children, a gorgeous granddaughter, and a fulfilling marriage. I would like to break boundaries that are set by society for women my age and older and I would like to widen my abilities and exceed limitations. I entered Mrs. SA as I am in a search to connect with people and to become a personal brand. I would like to be a brand ambassador for a Skin and Hair Care company for mature women.”

How has your journey in the competition impacted your personal and professional life?

“It is important to have the right balance between personal and professional life. When you understand your priorities, you can create boundaries that will help you prevent ambition from getting out of hand. I have garnered admiration from my peers. The support from my family and friends pushed me to be better in every aspect of my life.”

What challenges have you faced during the competition, and how did you overcome them?

“My greatest challenge was being rejected, as getting sponsors is no easy task. I’ve learned with every ‘NO’ comes an opportunity to keep going. Once I’d found that drive to keep pushing, I’d eventually received a final and full sponsorship. Never stop trying! ”

Can you share your daily wellness routine?

“I believe a well-balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health, but that is not always viable. The quality of our relationships greatly impacts our well-being. Surround yourself with positive and supportive individuals who uplift and inspire you.Creating a consistent sleep routine is crucial for optimal well-being. I ensure my bedroom is cool, dark, and free from distractions. “

How do you balance your mental and physical health, especially in preparation for a competition?

“Physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind; hence I incorporate gym into my daily routine. I attend a gym at least 4 times a week but ensure I do at least 6000 steps on the days I do not attend the gym. “

What are your go-to beauty and skincare routines?

“I exfoliate regularly. Those dead skin cells sometimes don’t slough off as quickly as we’d like and can clog pores and leave your skin looking older. Sunscreen should be a priority and the next step in your beauty routine checklist. I never go to bed with makeup, no matter how tired I am. I get rid of the dirt and makeup on my face by washing with a cleanser or gentle soap before bed. I prevent and repair face wrinkles by using a Retinol every night. “

How do you define beauty, and how does it reflect in your lifestyle?

“True beauty is beyond physical appearance. It is a kind and good character that shines through and does not fade regardless of your age. It allows us to shine through our unique qualities and virtues. True beauty stems from within, radiating outwardly to touch the lives of others. “

How would you describe your personal style, and how has it evolved over time?

“My personal style is a journey. The inspiration came from years of mix styles and influences from different people, artists, etc. I work for a corporate company and the style was corporate workwear. After Covid and the New Normal of working from home, my style changed to more casual. But every opportunity I get to go out in the town, I “bling” it up. “

What fashion advice would you give to someone looking to find their own style?

“Know your body, shape, type, and profile. Get inspiration from the world around you. Dress for the season. Very important, clean out your closet. Don’t hang onto clothes, you will never fit into it again. Play around with colours and choose them for your personal style and taste.  Try new trends. Accessorise, it makes a world of a difference. Ask for help, someone else's opinion might just cause you to be the best dressed person for the night. “

As a role model, what message do you want to convey to women and young girls?

“Make mistakes, but don’t repeat them. Let them be an education for you. These are valuable life lessons. If possible, learn from your elders. They have run that race. Some mistakes can be avoided, and some can take years to recover from. Know your worth and your values. Establish a close knit and reliable circle of friends that will inspire you to grow and be the best version of yourself. “

How do you use your platform to advocate for causes you're passionate about?

“I am currently a member of APCOC, Alra Park Can Overcome, a cancer association in the community that I grew up in. When given the opportunity, I will use the public platform to advocate for this group of ladies to continue with this great and humble work they are doing.”

Can you share an instance where you felt you made a significant impact through your advocacy work?

“I joined APCOC because of the passion I have, to care. We regularly do fundraising and at times I am the MC for these events. Most of the ladies that come to these events are cancer patients. I do my best to really give them a good time by turning a sombre mood into a lighthearted occasion full of dancing and laughing, bringing light back into the eyes of women who truly needed a boost. “

What does empowerment mean to you, and how do you empower others through your work or business?

“Empowerment to me simply means giving someone a compliment or merely just greeting someone, no matter the hierarchy. Empowerment means to take time out of your busy schedule to acknowledge others around you. e.g. “You are heard, you are valued. I am listening.” It does wonders for anyone to hear that. “
